Counting Animals

Yearly average number of cows is best determined from your DHI Herd Summary.

If you need an average for the year from Dairy Comp there are a couple of approaches you can take.

First, you can average the numbers for the year from you monitor report. The monitor report is often tailored for each farm and yours may look different. If you would like your Monitor report to begin accumulating different numbers, call support at Dairy One 800-344-2697, or Email to DMR@DAIRYONE.COM and they will help you set it up.

Monitor is a utility within Dairy Comp that calculates and stores pre-described metrics. Many dairies "run" this report each month after receiving their Dairy One test day results.

On the Command Line, type Monitor

The numbers across the top are dates in MONTH DAY format with the most recent date furthest to the right.

Second, you can use ECON\ID to "eye ball" your animal numbers. This can be handy if you do not run Monitor regularly.

Type ECON\ID on the command line and press enter. Then, when prompted, enter the beginning and ending dates for the time period you wish to review.

Next it will prompt for the events you want to look at. Select the events you would like to look at by left clicking a "check" in the associated box.

Then click the OK box.

Once you are looking at the graph you can,

Turn lines on and off, by left clicking on categories in the "key" box on the right
Zoom in by left clicking and dragging a box from upper left to bottom right, (unzoom by making a box in the opposite direction)
Force the graph to display the weekly averages for a line by double left clicking the line. Turn the values off by double clicking the line again.

This box is zoomed in and we double clicked on the "Milking" line to get an idea of the number of animals milking throughout the year. (Add Dry to get adult totals.)

Counting Heifers

To count your heifers you can also use monitor, or just count them now with these commands typed on the command line.

Count for lact=0 age<9 (Heifers less than 9 months of age)

(The 340 in this case is heifers less than 9 months of age.)

Count for lact=0 age=9-15 (Heifers 9 to 15 months)

Count for lact=0 age>15. (Heifers older than 15 months)

Culling Reasons

The best way to get reasons animals were sold is the "dead cow" report in monitor.

ECON\ED FOR LACT>0

E designates the dEad cow report,
D designates prompt for Date If you do not prompt for dates the default is the last 365 days.

Enter the dates when prompted.

- Dairy Comp 305 ----- Farm Credit Large Dairy Example ---------------- Page Command : ECON\ED FOR LACT>0

Like most things with Dairy Comp you may have customized your reasons sold. Your reasons sold are defined in Setup under the codes tab. I you care about the way the reasons sold, line up in your DHI processing center, do not change them. If you do not care how they line up at DHI, you can change them any way you prefer.

Number of culls in the first 60 days of lactation

Alternatively, you can type EVENTS\6SI and it will give you the chance to select the events you want rather than list all events. In this example you would count SOLD 39+15, and Died 33+6, for a total of 93 animals sold at 60 or fewer days in milk.

Calving Interval

SUM CINT for Lact>1 (There has to be more than one calving to find the interval between them, thus the "for lact>1")

This gives the average calving interval as 407 days. If you would like that in months, divide the 407 by 30.4 (the average number of days in a month). In this case that would be 407/30=13.4 months.

Breedings (Services) per Conception

BREDSUM\BD will prompt for the Date range, and then will return the %CONC (Conception Rate and SPC service per conception by Breeding number and for all breedings.

This herd has a 3.9 Services Per Conception or 26% Conception Rate.

Average Age of First Calf Heifers

SUM AGEFR FOR LACT=1

The Average Age of Freshening for first lactation animals is 23 months for this herd.

Average Days In Milk is best taken from the Dairy One Herd Summary, or use ECON\ID and zoom and click on the DIM line to estimate.

Average Age all animals - SUM AGE FOR LACT>0

SUM DIM

Calving Skills (EVENTS\3 or EVENTS\3S to Select the date range.

EVENTS\3S FOR LACT=1 will return the same table for only first lactation animals.
Total Young Stock Mortality

EVENTS\5SI FOR LACT=0

Select the beginning and ending dates, then select Sold and Died from the Events Indication box.

You also might like to look at this graphically.

In the Egraph Dialogue box select SOLD and DIED, and then enter the date ranges you want to look at, and select Age(heifers) and Use Scatter, then click on the "Go" button.

This us very nice to see the pattern of age of sold heifers, along with the time of year they left the herd.

Pregnancy Risk

BREDSUM\ED

This example herd has a pregnancy risk of 20%, meaning that 20% of all eligible, 21 day cycles, resulted in a pregnancy for this time period.

Percent of herd pregnant right now.

PCT DUE>0 FOR LACT>0 (This says calc the percent animals pregnant of those who have a lactation greater than zero). DUE is the due date and "0" if an animal is not pregnant. You can also use the average number of cows for the year rather than the current.

51 %, or 486 animals of the 939 adults are pregnant.
